Three Daughters of Eve

I’ve just finished reading ‘Three Daughters of Eve’ by Elif Shafak. I picked my paper book copy up in a second hand shop and was immediately drawn to it.
I got lost in this story, I felt as though I could relate to Peri’s thoughts and experiences so intimately, regardless of the fact I’m from a totally different culture and background. I loved her descriptions of university life in Oxford, her somewhat solitary and lonely experience of studying overseas, and her immersion into literature as a form of escape.
For the re-creation of the book cover design, I wanted to focus on layering images to visually show the many layers of the story, as it alternates between Peri’s life in Instanbul and Oxford, her past and her present, her desires and her regrets.
I also found the layering and merging of the three women, or ‘The Three Daughters of Eve’ and not showing their detailed facial features, only their lips, hair and Mona’s headscarf, adds to a sense of mystery and intrigue about the characters and how their lives, beliefs and experiences intersected and overlapped with one another.
I really enjoyed playing with the colours for this cover and decided on this quite bright duo tone effect.
This is a personal creative project. I’ve always had an obsession with book covers. I decided to challenge myself to create a new book cover for each novel to read.
